History of Ohemma Ku
Ohemma Ku (Queen’s) Society, Abiriw, Ghana
Ohemma Ku (Queen’s Society) originated in the town of Abiriw, Ghana, West Africa. It was during the preparation for the Abiriw festival in Ghana that Nana’s Okyeame (Spokesperson) Sister Akua Adubea approached her. Sister Akua explained the Ghana custom that all chiefs and queen mothers should have an entourage following them during the festival. Sister Akua gathered a group of women of all ages to walk through the town celebrating with Nana Nkosuohemma (formerly Ankobeahene). Nana and the women celebrated the festival for seven days eating together, sharing stories, and dancing together on The Circle of Light (COL) Society Compound. The festival came to an end and Sister Akua approached Nana that the women wanted to continue to meet. They gathered together to share their experiences and dreams which made them feel connected and happy. It was then that Nana Nkosuohemma had the vision to form the first Ohemma Ku Society (Queens Society). Nana appointed Sister Akua to facilitate activities during Nana Nkosuohemma’s absence until her untimely death in 2016.
In 2019, Ohemma Ku began its first formalized six-month program that includes lectures, purification rituals, a soul naming ceremony, and sacred healing circles to celebrate and dance in our femininity. The same year, Ohemma Ku held its first graduation in America. Twenty-one women attended the six-month program and received the honors of graduating. The graduation was just the beginning of a lifelong bond the women formed which continues to thrive.
2020 was a challenging year for many, and we are moving forward in 2021. The Covid 19 pandemic led the Ohemma Ku Team to re-evaluate what Ohemma Ku looks like and moving forward to launch a hybrid program (online and in-person). One of the core values of Ohemma Ku is the interactive, interpersonal connection among women learning and sharing their lives. We believe that we can still maintain that tradition with an online, modified curriculum and we look forward to your interest and participation.
